One of a series of papers looking at thermal spray processes and mechanical testing for quality of coatings. This work developed fast on-line quality assessment techniques to complement slower inspection techniques. Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE plc) funded this research (contact details: Principal Engineer/Team Leader, AWE plc UK). This led to a further funding being awarded for additional research on the thermal spray process, secured through Monitor Coatings Ltd. Tyne and Wear, UK (contact details: Managing Director). This led to a further PhD on testing of concrete strength with a range of additives.
