Hommage à Chopin
This is an example of digital release curated and performed by the researcher, offering new insights into how an array of diverse composers have responded to the compositional and pianistic legacy of Frederic Chopin. It was published during the Chopin bicentenary year and includes music by familiar composers alongside little-known figures. Lighter music (such as that by Bendel and Godard) finds its place alongside more serious and significant compositions, such as the Busoni Variations and Federico Mompou’s Variations sur un theme de Chopin, which is the centrepiece of the disc.
By identifying, selecting and presenting these works in the form of a recorded recital, Plowright offers an original contribution, in and through performance, to our understanding of Chopin’s legacy. The reach and significance of the impact of this research is indicated by 5* reviews in Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine, The Daily Telegraph, New Zealand Herald and others, and reflected in the awards it has garnered, which include Editor’s Choice (Gramophone); Diapason D’Or (Diapason); and Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.
