At the article’s core were sixteen extended interviews with former prisoners incarcerated for IRA offences. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, inputted into, coded and analysed with the QSR Nudist qualitative data programme over a period of eight years. Furthermore all available relevant IRA statements and material from Sinn Féin were accessed and sifted. In addition, comparative published material was gathered on armed opposition movements in South Africa and Namibia. The result was an exceptionally rich dataset that was striking in its scale and scope. The quotations that appeared in the article represented merely the distillation of a major research effort.
