Additional information

This paper addresses the outstanding problem (dating from 1950) of the behaviour of sound waves in low density gases. Building on a kinetic model, introduced by the authors in DoI:10.1016/j.physa.2008.07.009 that accounts for molecular spatial distributions, this paper shows for the first time that a hydrodynamic method is able to predict phase speed and damping over the full range of Knudsen number. The work underpinned the subsequent award EP/K038621/1 £275k. The paper has influenced groups in: USA, DoI:10.1121/1.4757971 and DoI:10.1016/j.physa.2011.10.003; and Germany, DoI:10.1017/jfm.2012.98 and DoI:10.1063/1.4745004.
