Towards a Simpler Selection Process for Maintenance Strategies
The main contribution of this journal paper was the proposal of two new methods for the selection of maintenance approaches at macro and micro levels. Firstly, the work questioned conventional wisdom in relation to the development of companywide maintenance strategies and suggested these that selection should be made according to the plant situation rather than defaulting to ‘planned maintenance’. Secondly, a rationalised process for the selection of maintenance strategies for machines is offered based on a simplified set of RCM parameters. Both innovations provide novel approaches which drive further research whilst at the same time offering useful tools for maintenance professionals to use in practice. This paper forms part of a wider investigation into the impact on manufacturing performance of the linkage between manufacturing and maintenance strategy. The research was sponsored by the Regional Development Agency ‘One North East’ as part of the Engineering Fellows Programme.
