Additional information

Compacted fill and organic soils are susceptible to large volumetric changes which presents a major challenge for the construction industry. There is reluctance to deploy vibro stone columns in these conditions due to previous failures and high profile litigation cases. This paper reports on tests conducted in conjunction with Keller Geotechnique (world’s leading contractor in this area) to evaluate methods of columns reinforcement to extend the use of granular columns to stabilise these soils. This work provided preliminary results and key design insight that have impacted positively on full scale trial tests to validate design methodology.
