Additional information

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is responsible for around 10% of all hospital deaths and 25,000 people per year die as a result VTE in England alone. Anti-embolism stockings are one of the 2 main prophylaxis/treatments for VTE. The fit of anti-embolism stockings to patient’s legs is critical to treatment safety and success. However, this paper is the first ever to examine the fit of anti-embolism stockings and it demonstrates serious shortcomings in the fit and sizing policy of 10 product ranges made by 4 major brands. 942 legs were measured and measurements rigorously compared to anti-embolism stocking size charts.
