English abstract

ITV’s first ‘Double Your Money’ highlights the difficulties in establishing a standard performance style for ‘real people’ on television. A Goffmanian perspective identifies issues of: physical contact and body placement; modes of address; awareness of the absent audience at home; and the use of styles of self-performance imported from other media. Presenter Hughie Green’s own style is often challenged implicitly or explicitly by his ‘guests’, including one elderly man well accustomed to a different form of stage comedy. The many problems encountered in this one live half hour demonstrate that self-performance for TV is developed and acquired, not spontaneous.
