Assessment of brain tissue injury after moderate hypothermia in neonates with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy : a nested substudy of a randomised controlled trial
This highly cited paper (129 citations, Oct 13) looked at the effect of moderate hypothermia, a novel treatment for asphyxia brain damage in newborn infants that has been shown to improve clinical outcomes (Azzopardi, New England Journal of Medicine, 2009). This paper used MR imaging methods to demonstrate the mechanism for this clinical effect. Therapeutic hypothermia decreases brain tissue injury in infants with hypoxic–ischaemic encephalopathy. The predictive value of MRI for subsequent neurological impairment is not affected by therapeutic hypothermia. This paper was published in the leading neurology journal.
