Additional information

Analysis of the effects of radiation on multispectral satellite image encryption using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) on board spacecraft is presented. Results evidence that AES cannot be considered reliable in harsh environments. A new fault-tolerant AES algorithm is proposed, capable of error detection and correction of single-bit errors occurring during the execution of the algorithm in orbit. The research was jointly funded (£80k) by EPSRC and Surrey Satellite Technology Limited, (SSTL). Impact is in informing the space industry on adopting onboard image encryption.
