Additional information

The Discrete Element Method has been widely used by researchers in materials engineering, chemical engineering, pharmaceutical studies and geological sciences. The physics of the method is in the contact laws used in the numerical simulation. Contact laws used by researchers are often over-simplistic making simulation results questionable. This paper presents a systematic numerical study of the contact laws. This was made possible by a novel finite element technique – the Material Point Method. The paper provided a set of specific contact laws and a robust approach for users to obtain contacts laws in their own applications.
