Additional information

I describe the role of a type of neurons I discovered, the so-called ‘concept cells’, for memory formation. The firing characteristics of these neurons is contrasted with behavioural studies, modelling works, evidence from lesion studies in humans and single cell recordings in animals, to conclude that concept cells are the key component of episodic memories. The proposed role of concept cells in memory gave rise to an invitation to write an article in Scientific American –that was featured in the cover– and to a USD 1.45M HFSP grant in collaboration with Rockefeller University, Hebrew University and SISSA in Italy.
