Additional information

The contact model for bonded granulates was employed by Komatsu Ltd (www.komatsu.com/) and employed to model the blade – soil interaction for the operations of their earthmoving devises (see Tsuji et al., 2012 J. Terramechanics, 49: 37-47). The work has led to Royal Society funding (RG090340 £15k) for project “Modelling geotechnical plane strain boundary value problems by the Distinct Element Method” and from BP (Mr Andy Hill, Andy.Hill@uk.bp.com) for an industrially funded PhD studentship (EPSRC conversion case): “Mechanical characterisation of soil-pipe interaction for on-bottom pipelines subject to lateral buckling by DEM analyses”.
