God's Fury, England's Fire: A New History of the English Civil Wars
This is a substantial reinterpretation of the English revolution which rests on very extensive research work, particularly in the pamphlet literature of the period, and an effective engagement with a very large secondary literature. This research work underpins a substantially new thesis about the relationship between military mobilisation and political radicalisation, and about the relationship between popular and elite politics, and political allegiances. The effectiveness of the argument is dependent upon the completion of a lengthy period of research which is equivalent to the effort required to produce at least two outputs.
