This paper presents the results of an experimental study of Haptic Digital Audio Effects with and without force feedback. It was published in ‘Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence’, a peer-reviewed journal that presents a selection of revised conference papers from the 9th International Gesture Workshop, GW 2011. The GW workshops are biennial, interdisciplinary events that bring together researchers from the fields of computer science, engineering, human-computer interaction, linguistics, cognitive, and neuro sciences to further the advancement of gesture-based human-machine interaction.

Haptic digital audio effects refer to a novel category of digital audio effects. The research demonstrates that haptic modality changes and improves the user’s experience significantly, and this paper argues that the introduction of haptics in new instruments for musical expression will affect, ameliorate and enhance the experience of electronic music performances based on digital audio effects.
