A method to increase the energy density of supercapacitor cells by the addition of multiwall carbon nanotubes into activated carbon electrodes
This paper is at the forefront of the world-wide drive to raise supercapacitor performance. This is a first internationally, where just 0.15wt% MWCNTs provided increases of >2x power density and 1.6x energy density of AC only-based supercapacitors. The high areal loading makes then suitable for automotive applications demonstrated by FIAT. This paper provides a rigorous characterisation and EIS modelling of supercapacitors, to explain the beneficial effect of just 0.15wt% MWCNTs, SEM of the coatings and pore size analysis of both coatings and powders. Additionally a 1wt% MWCNT loading and other binder and electrolyte solvents were investigated.
