This book is is the outcome of a research project lasting some six years. It involved extensive archival research in repositories all over Europe and North America, and in a host of public and private collections. At around 150,000 words in length it is probably the most exhaustive, or any rate the longest biography of Cezanne to date. It also entailed a considerable amount of translation from the French. In terms of writing and reflection, it benefited from a year spent as Warden's Fellow at St Antony's College, Oxford.
