The 2013 book, first published in 2008, is in an updated edition specifically published for new Chinese and American audiences and evidences Bonnell’s project and research output, TRACE. Artists, curators and publishers were invited to share their methodologies and research through a series of case studies. The research thought which instigated TRACE is summarised to demonstrate the practical, theoretical and logistical aspects of running artist-led projects. TRACE supported and mentored emerging artists and pioneered disseminatory approaches to international acclaim. The further success of TRACE is demonstrated by invitations for TRACE to review portfolios at international photography festivals including Fotofest Houston, Texas, Rhubarb-Rhubarb, Birmingham and the Photography Triennial, Odense, Denmark. One example specific to the assessment period is the TRACE-curated exhibition, publication and symposium 'Elusive' in 2011. ‘Elusive’ featured photography, video, performance and book works; the resultant publication included an essay by Martin Newth and an interview with the curator. 'Elusive' collected the work of 29 established and emerging artists including Anna Fox, Toby Glanville, Juneau Projects, Wendy McMurdo, Spencer Murphy, Helen Sear, Self Publish Be Happy, Nigel Shafran and Clare Strand. The 2013 volume is a valuable record of Bonnell’s creative corpus and an authoritative text on international photographic practice.
