Additional information

Gasoline direct injection in spark ignition engine allows the manufacturers to operate the engine with a higher compression ratio because of the charge cooling provided by the fuel evaporation within the combustion chamber which therefore increases the thermal efficiency of the engines. We investigated one of the major challenges in GDI engine, the cycle to cycle variability and its effect on nano-scale particulate matter. We established a link between the measurable combustion characteristics and nano-scale particulate matter. The findings of this work have already enabled Ferrari to calibrate their latest engine for EURO VI particulate matter emissions.
