Additional information

This paper presents a new method for analysing buckling problems in plates and shells. The method is useful for fast pre-sizing of panels in the preliminary design stages of large structures such as aircraft wings and fuselage. The solutions were heuristically derived but agree excellently with detailed FEM results.

The work was carried out with an Airbus engineer based in Germany as part of an effort to produce a better structured buckling design process and reduce analysis time. The method presented deals with different boundary conditions, multi-axial loading and plate aspect ratios (more than the options available in ESDU).
