This journal article was a much cited work (top 10 for IJAA 2010-2011) on the surface modification of timber, providing a significant contribution to the ICE Manual of Construction Materials; Ch.63 Understanding timber structural connection systems. It also contributed to background research for several publications by the authors. The underpinning science led to the filing of Patent No. 1113363.4 (Aug 2011) - Method of joining ligneous materials and products made by the method. This has been subsequently exploited in the development of the first commercialised bamboo and natural fibre bonded mountain bike manufactured by Bamboo Bikes in the UK (www.bamboobikes.co).
