Additional information

This paper contributes to technology and practical application of optoelectronics. In collaboration with University of Oulu, Finland and A.F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia, large mode volumes are identified as key to generating short, high-power optical pulses by gain-switched laser diodes, and a new construction to realise them is proposed. The lasers have been subsequently fabricated and used in a prototype automotive safety systems (Hallman et al., Meas. Science Technology. 23, 025202 (2012)) performing as predicted in the paper.
