This paper provides unique visual insights to the internal mechanisms responsible for segregating granular flows. The results show interparticle interactions that were hitherto only surmised, and these are highly relevant to the development of numerical models for multiphase debris flows. The paper was awarded a 2013 Telford Premium prize by the Institution of Civil Engineers.
