Additional information

In this paper it is demonstrated that the parabolic arch rib is not the optimal form to carry a uniformly distributed load when a standard material is involved, as believed since the time of Huygens in the 17th century. The numerical result obtained paved the way to a new generation of analytical solutions as published in Proc. Roy. Soc. A in 2011. When published the paper attracted considerable media interest, such as an article on the Science Magazine website (http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2010/01/14-02.html).
