This paper was the culmination of a four year research project into applying Incremental Evolution to Artificial Neural Networks. The method was specifically aimed at producing control systems for mobile robots. There was a flurry of initial interest in the paper, including a one page feature in the popular science magazine “New Scientist” which in turn led to wider coverage in the press. Other research groups expressed an interest in the technique and it is hoped that this will lead to citations at a later date.
