Ether-Bond-Containing Ionic Liquids as Supercapacitor Electrolytes
The selection of a suitable ionic liquid (IL) for a supercapacitor electrolyte has never been subjected to a rational selection or molecular design process. Here we identify a highly promising, if not essential, feature of ILs, the presence of ether bonds within their structure. We demonstrate explicitly that ether-bond containing ionic liquids can exhibit intrinsic capacitances double that of their alkyl chain equivalents. Subsequent experiments based on these ILs (as yet unpublished) suggest that we have reached the energy density of Pb acid batteries. This represents a major development in this area and will excite considerable interest.
