Additional information

A single misfire during cold-start will cause an engine to fail the emissions legislation. This paper identified different mechanisms for misfire with different fuel injection strategies, by a combination of ignition measurements, spray and combustion imaging. Also, the use of chemiluminescence led to an EPSRC funded project (EP/H049967/1) - Fundamental Study on CH* and OH* Flame Emissions as Indicators of Heat Release and AFR at Engine Relevant Conditions of Temperature and Pressure. BT (former DPhil student) is now working for Jaguar (employers of XC and GE).
