Additional information

This paper reported a new approach to combining a range of chemical reactions, including burner, reformer and CO selective catalytic reductions, efficiently into a single unit. This involved developing new methods for thermal energy management, advanced heat exchanger technology, system temperature control and thermal flow analysis. Efforts in system optimisation of this complicated thermal system through energy conservation analysis initiated a subsequent study of entropy generation minimisation. It led to a three-year EPSRC and BAE Systems co-sponsored research project on avionic environment control systems and subsequently the concept was developed into an engineering product by Intelligent Energy Ltd.
