Additional information

This paper reported the culmination of several years of effort to develop a breast equivalent material for various applications in medicine. For the first time we created a material which had the same physical, mechanical and x-ray properties as a range of breast tissue types. Such materials are necessary for a range of applications, including testing the quality of mammography systems and forming a biopsy training tool for surgeons. The material is now in clinical use for both applications. I originated the idea and led the work. It is published in the highest impact factor journal for the subject.
