This early use of VCSELs in chaos communications led to further applications in bi-directional communications (South West Univ., Chongqing and SW Jiaotong Univ, Chengdu, China IEEE Photon. Tech. Lett.,25,1398,2013, IEEE JQE, 49, 274, 2013; JLT 31,461, 2013) and fault location in WDM-PON systems (Taiyuan Uni; JLT 30, 2420, 2012) as well as work on the unpredictability of chaotic time series (SW Jiaotong Univ, Chengdu; IEEE JQE, 47, 1354, 2011; IEEE Sel. Top. QE, 17,1212,2011). A recent paper in Review of Modern Physics, 85, 421,2013 draws attention to the significance of the experimental work reported here.
