This paper was awarded the Charles Sharpe Beecher Prize 2009 by the Aerospace Division of the IMechE for the best paper on an aerospace subject published in the Journal of Aerospace Engineering. It also formed part of a keynote presentation at the 8th International Conference on Damage assessment in Structures in Beijing in 2009.
