The photocatalytic decomposition of microcystin-LR using selected titanium dioxide materials
The article reports a study comparing the effectiveness of a range of titanium dioxide catalysts for photocatalytic destruction of the cyanotoxin, microcystin-LR. This work was performed in collaboration with the University of Hannover and Sachtleben Chemie GmbH with whom the granular photocatalysts were developed. Photocatalytic technology is one of few effective methods for the removal of this highly dangerous liver toxin from water. The application of a granular catalyst in a flow reactor unit, developed and patented by RGU (WO 2005/033016), is described and this paper contributes in moving forward the potential application of this technology for drinking water treatment.
