Additional information

This work was part of an on-going research programme in the area of tribology of bearing materials. The project was funded by SKF Engineering Research Centre, The Netherlands (Dr Robin Cundill, robincundill@hotmail.com). Another project with SKF is on “Defect Tolerance Assessment of Silicon Nitride in Rolling Contact” (commenced in 2011 and continuing). The work has also resulted in attracting new collaborative research projects. An example is a project on “Electroplated nano-composite coatings for tribological systems with focus on water lubrication”, sponsored by Schaeffler Groups, Germany (contact: Dr V Bakolas), which started in 2012, with a PhD student from March 2012.
