A new interparticle friction apparatus for granular materials
A new apparatus that measures interparticle friction of sand-sized grains immersed in air or in a fluid is presented. Simplicity of sample preparation, reliability, moderate cost and easy maintenance are important features of this new machine. For submerged tests, the influence of the lubricating fluid type on the interparticle friction was quantified. This study has important applications in silos construction, chemical and petroleum engineering. This new apparatus has been selected as an example of a new micromechanical tool by the committee organizing the forthcoming international workshop of the ISSMGE TC101-TC105 23rd-24th May 2013 at the University of Hong Kong.
