Double-weighted statement
As China Goes, So Goes the World was the result of five years of intensive research and writing. The project required identifying the connections among previously unconnected subjects, including the automotive industry, China's changing class structure, the influence of Taiwanese on mainland China, and the re-emergence of what Gerth calls 'extreme markets' for babies, human organs, and endangered species. As the footnotes confirm, the book utilized an exceptionally wide range of materials (mostly in Chinese), made a complex argument for how diverse phenomena can be best connected, and required drafting and redrafting as new sources become available daily.
