Earlier work and collaboration have been extended to model the formation of fast-growing, breakaway oxides around the tips of bondcoat asperities. This is the first attempt to estimate the importance of the continuity strains associated with non-uniform oxide growth. It led to an invited talk (Evans) at the ‘38th International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films’, USA, 2011.
