Colonialism and violence in Zimbabwe: a history of suffering
Colonialism and Violence in Zimbabwe is a highly original treatment of cutting-edge themes in the historiography of Africa: colonial violence, insurrection, and counter-insurgency warfare, 1850s to the 1990s. This study involved research in English and Shona, mostly in Zimbabwe, in twenty different archives and locales and 150 interviews conducted by the author. It is a microhistory of one specific area in Zimbabwe and at the same time a broader social history of suffering that makes a major contribution to the understanding of violence and conflict. The volume critically examines the concept of violence while demonstrating its experience in everyday life.
