Double-weighted statement

Based on the close examination of hundreds of unpublished private diaries from the interwar period, thousands of letters sent to Mussolini by members of the general public (in the archives of Mussolini’s personal secretariat in Rome), secret police reports, and Vatican papers, this book seeks to examine, in a novel fashion, how ordinary people experienced fascism. Its reach is vast, focusing on the often intense relationship of men, women and children with Mussolini to underline the extent to which fascism derived emotional impetus by mapping onto existing cultural templates (not least religious) and articulating frustrated national ambitions.
