Additional information

I conceived and co-curated this exhibition with Tamas Jovanovics. It was a group exhibition of eight artists (showing 24 works)- all painters based in London selected to showcase aspects of contemporary abstract ‘Geometric’ painting in the UK to a Hungarian audience. The artists were Jane Bustin, Simon Callery, Rose Davey, Lothar Gotz, Tamas Jovanovics, Karoly Kerseru, Dillwyn Smith and Estelle Thompson. The investigation of Concrete Art (non-representational geometric abstraction) was central to the ‘MADI’ Group, initiated in Buenos Aires in 1946 by the Hungarian-Argentinian artist and poet Gyula Kosice. Hence the significance and interest in this aspect of contemporary painting research to be shown in Budapest in 2012. The connection between this historical movement and contemporary practice was unique research, with studio visits and discussion with each artist being a significant aspect of the evolution of this curatorial project. A thirty-six page, full colour catalogue was produced to accompany and contextualise the exhibition. I wrote the catalogue introduction/text, which was translated by Tamas Jovanovics. The exhibition and catalogue were supported and funded by The British Council. Funding for the catalogue also came from the University of Sunderland, Magyar Olympia Bizotsag and the Magic Lamp Foundation (Csodalampa Alapitvany) based in Budapest. B55 Gallery advertised in Hungarian Art Forum. At the Private View on the 15.02.2012 speakers included The British Council representatives, Budapest and visiting European Director and Hungarian Olympic Committee representatives. I gave an introduction to the concept of the exhibition and a talk on the work selected, which was filmed for Hungarian TV. Tamas Jovanovics translated and also gave an interview to TV, radio and press. The exhibition was reviewed in Time Out (Budapest edition) and Budapest Art 90 Degrees of Separation: 8 London Artists at B5 by Bullet Shih 21.02.2012.
