Double-weighted statement

The book required extensive collection of materials and complex analysis (including die-studies) of large quantities of material from archaeological sites (1,425 coins from Monte Iato, 15,000 from other sites) together with thousands of better preserved specimens from continental museums. The access to the materials, scattered over 18 museums and excavation storage facilities, was extremely difficult. The documentation was time-consuming: c. 2,000 coins had to be cleaned, cast and photographed. The work involved collaboration with many Italian and international teams and included not only the study of coins, but also of other archaeological finds.

English abstract

This two-volume work provides a full study of 1,425 coins from Monte Iato in Sicily. The bulk of the material comprises Punic coins and local Sicilian issues produced under Roman rule. Largely unstudied, they are dated for the first time through archaeological contexts and compared to 15,000 coins from other Sicilian sites and hoards. These include much unpublished material, presented for the first time. The result of the analysis is a complete monetary history of Sicily, the first Roman province, and a fundamental contribution to the knowledge of its administration, thanks to magistrates’ names occurring on the coins.
