Newbury conceived the publication, including its overall design and layout, selected and sequenced the images, wrote a substantial contextualising essay (16k words) drawing on extensive archival research and interviews with the photographer’s widow and daughter, and commissioned two additional essays by leading South African historians, and a foreword by Amanda Hopkinson. The research and publication has been supported by two grants from the Paul Mellon Centre. Newbury has also curated two exhibitions related to this publication (Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford July 2011 – January 2012; District Six Museum, Cape Town, September 2013 – February 2014).
