English abstract

This chapter examines the reference points and narratives created around Germany’s Weimar Constitution (including important references to the First World War that were used to justify that ‘the people’s war’ had created the people’s state and a democratic constitution). Efforts of trying to create a heroic founding story for the Constitution and the Weimar state in general become obvious in these links to the sacrifices of the First World War. My chapter also outlines how the republican holiday (Constitution Day) was celebrated and makes references to the celebration of national holidays in other European countries.
