Blood metal ion concentrations after hip resurfacing arthroplasty: A comparative study of articular surface replacement and Birmingham hip resurfacing arthroplasties
This paper extended work from 2008 [Joyce1], which indicated increased wear of the DePuy ASR hip resurfacing, to compare the performance of the ASR against another commonly used device, the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing implant. The results showed the ASR to be more sensitive to placement in terms of its performance, which was explained through a new concept, the Contact Patch to Rim (CPR) distance, which has subsequently become widely adopted (e.g. Underwood et al, 2012, J Eng Med, 217-26; Amstutz et al, 2012, DOI 10.1007/s11999-012-2347-y).
