Coupled dynamic-multidimensional modelling of free-piston engine combustion
Due to the particular operating characteristics, conventional simulation methods for crankshaft-based engines are not fully suitable to predict free piston engine (FPE) performance. The research reported in this paper produced for the first time a coupled solver for FPE performance and operation. This revealed the influence of compression energy and ignition timing on the indicated efficiency, peak pressure and operational optimisation. The research contributed to the award of TSB funded project ‘Libertine FPE powertrain generator’ (TP 11623-73145) and the commercial development of the Libertine FPE Ltd. concept through modelling and simulation (Sam Cockerill: sam.cockerill@libertine.co.uk).
