Additional information

Reports the first ever all-semiconductor photonic crystal surface emitting laser. This new type of laser offers the ultimate in control to a laser beam polarisation, direction and shape, yet has no robust manufacturing process. This paper demonstrates that conventional semiconductor manufacturing technologies may be applied to realise these lasers, opening the way for their development in a range of applications such as in illumination, sensing, displays, and in industrial applications. This work was the follow up to an earlier IEEE Photonics Technology Letter, and is the underpinning technology to a £700,000 EPSRC grant (EP/K023195/1).
