The paper advances photonic systems. The first paper to explain theoretically the performance of monolithic mode-locked laser diodes under external optical feedback, a problem on which there was a plethora of inconclusive and partly contradictory experimental results. The work has since been continued by other researchers, confirming the predictions made in it with different models (most notably Simos et al. IEEE JQE, 48, 872 (2012), and Otto et al., New J. Phys., 14, 113033, (2012)) while extending the work further.
