Additional information

This experimental work led to the first definition of a practical procedure for the simultaneous achievement of high-quality chaos synchronisation and robust message extraction (Priyardashi et al, Semiconductor Science and Technology, 27, article no. 094002, 2012) in optical chaos communications. In complementary experimental work, the key issue of message security was addressed (Priyardashi et al IEEE J. Selec.Top.Quant.Electronics, 19, 1700707, 2013). Together these advances define a configuration for an engineering implementation of this technology.
