Additional information

Provides a major advance in conceptual understanding, backed by data analysis and model simulation, of recharge in Chalk, UK’s primary groundwater resource. Integrates the most comprehensive chalk unsaturated zone hydrology dataset with most detailed representation of physical properties and characteristics. Explains why recharge is mainly through the low permeability chalk matrix (explaining long-term nitrate behaviour) and identifies key controls on catchment behaviour during floods and drought. Methodology led to funding under NERC’s Flood Risk from Extreme Events (NE/E002307/1), to investigate severe groundwater flooding during winter 2000/2001, and Changing Water Cycle (NE/I006621/1), investigating impact of climate change on groundwater resources, programmes.
