Art and religion in Eighteenth-Century Europe
This 125,000-word (348 page) book is a trans-national and comparative study, being the prime focus of Aston's research and writing across 6 years, involving the investigation of visual and textual sources spanning the whole eighteenth century from 15 principal repositories in Britain, France, and Ireland, collated here for the first time. The book also engages in depth with secondary literature in English, Spanish, Italian, and German. Research into many religious art images, derived primarily from the Clark Art Institute in America, was also necessary. Aston reflects the vigour of eighteenth-century studies by opening up a major new front for investigation.
