<12>This DFG-funded work results from an international collaboration with Dortmund, Birmingham and Saarbrücken. A preliminary version won a best paper award at GECCO-2008 in the largest track 'Genetic Algorithms' (51 combined Google Scholar cites). Maintaining diversity in the population is key for the success of evolutionary algorithms. This is the first work to rigorously compare common diversity-preserving mechanisms. It led Sudholt to follow-on work on parallel populations (GECCO-2010 and PPSN-2010 best papers) and an interdisciplinary 2M€ FET-Open grant (SAGE-R/138086, 2014-2016) bringing together evolutionary computation and population genetics. Evolutionary Computation (IF 2.10) is ranked 9/100 in CS, Theory and Methods).
